How to Move Your Mattress Without Damaging It, And When You Shouldn’t

How to Move Your Mattress Without Damaging It, And When You Shouldn’t

Moving house? Chances are your mattress is coming with you. But unlike boxes of books or kitchen gear, a mattress is bulky, delicate, and easy to damage if you are not careful. Whether it is getting scuffed on stairs, a poorly handled mattress can end up looking and feeling worse to wear.

At Sleep Republic, we know how much a mattress matters. It is an investment in your sleep, your health, and your everyday comfort. So here are our expert tips on how to move your mattress safely, and when it might be time to leave the old one behind.

Start by cleaning and prepping your mattress. Before you move, strip off all bedding and give the surface a quick vacuum to remove dust or debris. If your mattress has handles, use them carefully. They are great for adjusting position but not designed for lifting the full weight. Wrap your mattress in a breathable mattress bag or protective cover to guard against dirt, moisture, and knocks during the move. Avoid using thick plastic sheeting for long periods, as this can trap moisture and encourage mold.

When it comes to lifting and positioning, always keep the mattress upright on its side, never folded or crumpled. Folding a hybrid or spring mattress can damage its internal structure, especially one with pocket springs like those used in Sleep Republic mattresses. Never drag the mattress and always lift it with care using support straps or with the help of another person.

Next, use the right transport. Mattresses travel best in an enclosed van or moving truck where they can lie flat or stand securely upright without being bent or squashed. Avoid tying your mattress to the roof of your car unless absolutely necessary, and only for a very short trip. Not only can it be unsafe, but exposure to wind, dust, and sun can also cause surface damage or warping.

If you need to store your mattress during the move, keep it lying flat in a clean, dry area. Avoid storing it on its side for extended periods as this can lead to compression and a distorted shape. Make sure the storage space is ventilated and free of moisture.

Sometimes though, moving your mattress is not worth the trouble. If it is over eight years old, sagging, lumpy, or causing discomfort, it might be time to replace it. Older mattresses can impact your sleep quality and spinal health and moving them can do more harm than good. Instead of hauling a tired mattress into your fresh new space, consider upgrading.

At Sleep Republic, our hybrid mattresses arrive boxed for easy transport, making moving day a breeze. They are designed with high-quality materials for long-term comfort and support, and come with fast delivery, a 150-night risk-free trial, and a 12-year warranty. With one less thing to worry about, you can start sleeping better from the very first night.
