What to Ask Before Buying Your Child’s First Mattress

What to Ask Before Buying Your Child’s First Mattress

Your mattress is where you spend around one third of your life, yet it is often the most overlooked item when it comes to regular cleaning. While washing your sheets weekly is a great habit, your mattress also needs attention to stay fresh, hygienic and protected from long-term stains. The good news is, with a few simple routines, you can keep your mattress in top condition and extend its life.

Start with a regular vacuum. Once a month, strip the bed and use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, dead skin cells and allergens from the surface of your mattress. Pay extra attention to seams and edges where particles tend to settle. This step is essential for keeping your sleep space clean and improving air quality, especially if you suffer from allergies.

Next, tackle odours and moisture with baking soda. Lightly sprinkle baking soda across the surface of the mattress and let it sit for at least 30 minutes. For deeper deodorising, leave it on for several hours. Then, vacuum it up completely. Baking soda naturally absorbs smells and moisture, leaving your mattress feeling fresher.

If you are dealing with stains, act quickly. For most fresh spills, blot the area gently with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid scrubbing, as this can push the stain deeper into the fabric. For a simple cleaning solution, mix mild detergent with cold water and dab it onto the stain using a sponge or cloth. Avoid soaking the mattress, and allow it to dry fully before remaking the bed.

To keep future stains at bay, use a waterproof mattress protector. A quality protector is your first line of defense against spills, sweat and dust mites. It is easy to remove and wash regularly, which helps maintain hygiene and preserves the integrity of your mattress over time. For added freshness, look for breathable protectors made with natural materials that still allow airflow.

Another key tip is to rotate your mattress every three to six months. This helps distribute weight evenly and reduces the chance of body impressions or sagging. While many modern mattresses no longer need to be flipped, rotating from head to foot is still highly recommended.

At Sleep Republic, our hybrid mattresses are built with quality materials designed for comfort and durability. But like all mattresses, a little maintenance goes a long way. A clean mattress not only extends its lifespan, it also supports better sleep by creating a healthier and more comfortable environment. Combine regular cleaning with a breathable mattress protector and your mattress will continue to perform at its best night after night.
