How long does it take to adjust to a new mattress?
So you finally decided to ditch the old mattress and invest in a new one. First of all, congratulations are in order, because you’re about to experience a whole new level of good sleep. Surprisingly, many people aren’t aware that poor sleep is often the result of a bad mattress. You, my friend, have just invested your money very wisely. The team at Sleep Republic have been in the mattress industry for 20 years and can confidently split new mattress customers into one of two groups- the ones that can comfortably sleep on their new mattress from day one, and the ones who require a brief adjustment period. If you’re in the first group, well done! What are you doing here, go back to sleep! If you are in the second group, keep reading, we have some great information for you. Did you know it takes on average three weeks to get used to a new mattress? It can take anywhere from 3 days up to 6 weeks to get used to the feel of a new mattress. This is less about the mattress itself, and more due to the body needing time to get used to the new feel. You know when you get a new pair of shoes, they can be uncomfortable for the first wear or two, but after that they fit like a glove? This isn’t so much about the shoe softening or stretching, this is your foot adjusting to the shoe. The exact same thing needs to happen when you buy a new mattress. Let us guess, your previous mattress was pretty old right? That means that the foams had softened significantly over time, and the springs got a whole lot less springy. We can bet that it was probably pretty uncomfortable too. The trouble is, your body would be used to something not very comfortable or supportive, so despite the fact that you’re now sleeping on something that is much more supportive, it might not feel that great at first. You might wake up with a few aches and pains, and the mattress might feel a bit firmer than you were expecting. Don’t fret! This is totally normal and happens to a lot of people, particularly if (like us) you were born well before the internet existed. So fear not, your body will adjust and soon you will be drifting off to dreamland. In the meantime, we have 3 things we always recommend to assist in getting used to your new mattress. #1 CHECK YOUR BASE Does your new mattress have the proper base? The foundation that supports your mattress is a very important element for both comfort as well as ensuring the longevity of your mattress. For this reason, any curved or flexible type slats are not suitable. We recommend a solid straight timber slat base. Gaps between slats should not exceed 8cm – 10cm as gaps exceeding 10cm will not provide adequate support to the mattress. #2 DON’T SWAP BEDS We know it can be tempting to go back to the familiar when something feels new and different. But there’s a reason why you got a new mattress! Resist the urge to switch back to your old mattress if your new one feels too firm at first. As we mentioned before, your body needs time to adjust, and swapping back and forth between your old mattress and your new one won’t allow that to happen. It’s completely normal for your body to feel slightly sore the first few nights, similar to after you’ve done a gym workout. #3 TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE WHOLE FREE TRIAL PERIOD Good things come to those who wait. Why are mattresses always discounted?
Everybody loves a bargain. No matter how much an item costs, if it’s discounted by a significant margin, consumers believe it’s a great deal and that they win by taking advantage of it. The psychology behind discounts Having a sale works by tapping into “discounts psychology”. It’s why consumers come out in droves to shop during traditional sales periods, and why a sale at any time is perceived as something not to be missed. For the retailer, it helps clear stock and maximise profits. Consumers need to be able to see the original price as well as they price they will pay, and the savings will seem so appealing that they are compelled to take advantage of the deal. According to ACCC guidelines, pricing must be clearly displayed – so it’s the law to show both original price and the new, discounted price. But many savvy consumers might ask, is a 50 per cent discount real when it’s sustained over a long period of time? No. This is misleading advertising and vendors must keep records substantiating that prices displayed are actually discounted and not a new selling price. Not all, however, comply with this. Mattress “discounts” Mattresses are among those items that always seem to be on sale. Why is this? And is it legitimate? They are big-ticket items and most people only purchase a new mattress for themselves a few times in their lives. While mattresses should be replaced at least every decade (some experts suggest every seven years), most people wait much longer to invest in a new one. This can compromise their sleep quality and their health. By having a “sale”, mattress retailers offer incentives for shoppers to purchase and to do so more often. Yes, mattresses can be very expensive. The reasons for this are myriad, but one of the biggest reasons mattresses are so expensive is that they carry historically high traditional retailer margins. What this means is that traditional retailer mark-ups on mattresses are significant – if there is 50 per cent off a mattress, it’s quite likely that the retailer had placed a 100 per cent mark-up on the product. Some retailers even mark-up prices by 200 per cent! The real recommended price of the actual product is much closer to the sale price stated. This mark-up includes the store profit margin and the sales commission and will often be brand dependant. It’s also important to understand that big name brands don’t necessarily equate to a better product. With mattresses it is also difficult to begin to compare prices because retailers frequently change the model names of the mattress even though the specification might be the same, making a price comparison almost impossible. Buying mattresses online Modern shoppers can benefit enormously from shopping for mattresses online. While some consumers might feel this is a risky endeavour, it’s not. It is true that you can’t “try before you buy”, but in fact it is simply not possible from a few moments in store to get a true impression of what a mattress is like to sleep on night after night. The best online mattress retailers will offer a returns policy to trial the new mattress for a period of up to 100 days and an online seller who doesn’t stand behind their returns policy is easily exposed through online forums and reviews. Statistics demonstrate that buyer satisfaction is as high as for a mattress tried in-store. Back Pain? What a Pain! Here Are Some Scientifically Backed Solutions
We dig deep to find the best type of mattress to help relieve back pain, according to science There are many causes of back pain and it is important for serious or chronic back pain that you see a qualified medical professional for treatment or advice. This article is not meant to replace professional medical advice. Suffer from back pain? You are not alone! According to the Medical Journal of Australia (2009) up to 80% of Australians will suffer some form of back pain and 10% suffer a serious disability as a result of it. The term ‘back pain’ covers a huge spectrum of disorders, from very serious spinal degenerative conditions, to nerve issues, to the vague ache of your back letting you know that the mattress might be getting a bit long in the tooth (maybe like oneself!). It is a very complicated and personal thing with pain levels ranging from slight to excruciating. There is no single solution for back pain, be it medical treatment or mattress, but we are experts in knowing how to sleep well. So we set out to find what type of mattress would be most likely to alleviate typical non-serious lower back pain that many Australians experience. Is a hard mattress the solution? Traditionally the espoused remedy from orthopedic surgeons and others has been a ‘hard’ mattress. Well, there’s only one problem with that. For most of us, a hard sleep surface is a contradiction in terms of our ability to sleep, regardless of how much good it might be doing elsewhere. Even if it’s helping alleviate back pain, if the hard surface is uncomfortable, you won’t be sleeping anyways! We are by nature creatures of comfort, regardless of what’s ‘best’ for us. We all know our personal choice of comfort foods aren’t strictly following doctors orders! So do we really have to take to the ‘plank’ so to speak and sleep on a girder to help that lower back pain? Medium firm vs. hard. Well there’s good news, some research around from properly designed medical tests shows that medium-firm mattresses rather than firm mattresses improved back pain symptoms. Phew that’s lucky, no concrete slab required after all! One such test concludes that medium firm mattresses improved pain and disability outcomes among people with chronic non-specific lower back pain. How about just getting a new mattress? Research also shows that in addition to a medium firm mattress, the next best thing you can do is to buy a new mattress! The issue here is that for many of us its decades between mattress purchases and quite simply the current mattress isn’t doing the job it once did or should do. Some research shows the average age of mattresses is 9.5 years! Hang on, just think about that – to get an average of 9.5 means for every 1-year-old mattress there’s an 18 year old one, and on average we’ve spent 38 cumulative months on the one mattress! The same research showed that just replacing the old mattress increased sleep quality and reduced back discomfort. The study in question replaced the subject’s current mattress with a medium firm spring mattress. According to scientific research, getting a new mattress, even if your current one is a medium firm feel, is likely to improve back pain and discomfort outcome. What are you waiting for?
