Your guide to mattress types

Sleep Republic

The most common types of mattresses explained The science of sleep has come a long way since our ancestors first made their beds from piles of reeds and rushes. Today we can choose from a wide selection of different mattress types, each of which has unique advantages. At the Sleep Republic we have decades of experience in designing and making mattresses, and we’ve learned how to bring all the best types together into one perfect hybrid mattress, providing the very best sleep experience possible. Types of mattresses Coil Mattresses Coil mattresses have been around for over 100 years, and they are still widely used today because they’re cheap and weigh less than other mattress types. While coil mattresses may be fine for smaller children, they tend to sag under adults and are not very comfortable or supportive. The coil springs all move together inside the mattress, so any tossing and turning on one side of the bed is sure to disturb a sleeping partner on the other. Pocket spring mattresses Pocket spring mattresses contain lots of separate springs that can move independently, adjusting to your sleeping position and and minimising partner disturbance. Pocket springs can also be tailored to provide different levels of support in different parts of the bed for maximum comfort. A good general rule of thumb is to choose a pocket spring mattress that contains 1000 springs or more – anything below that is considered low quality. Polyfoam mattresses Polyurethane foam mattresses (also known as polyfoam) are the most common type of foam mattress. They are cheap and light but they provide poor support, are not very comfortable and are not well ventilated, allowing little airflow around the body. Polyurethane foam also breaks down quickly, so polyfoam mattresses don’t last very long. Natural latex foam mattresses Natural latex comes from the sap of a rubber tree. Latex foam’s potential for bedding was discovered in the 1930s, when latex mattresses offered new levels of comfort and pressure relief. Natural and renewable, latex provides very good support and ample air flow and cooling, because it contains thousands of tiny ventilation holes. Memory foam mattresses Memory foam is an innovative product developed by NASA. It softens in response to body heat, absorbing your weight as you sink in but then recovering its original shape afterwards. Memory foam mattresses are great for people suffering back pain and postural problems because they are so supportive and because they become warm, which can help to relieve sore joints. However too much memory foam can feel very solid and dense, leaving a sleeper feeling “encased”. Gel-infused memory foam mattresses Memory foam’s heat-retaining properties can also be a disadvantage, causing some sleepers to overheat. Gel-infused memory foam eliminates this problem thanks to special gel particles that disperse trapped heat. This enables gel-infused memory foam mattresses to stabilise temperatures within the bed while also speeding up spring-back time, making the mattress feel softer. Hybrid mattresses Hybrid mattresses are designed to combine the advantages of all the best mattress types in one bed. For example, at the Sleep Republic our hybrid mattresses consist of: A base layer of thousands of high-density pocket springs (2250 springs in our king size mattress). This provides tailored levels of support in five different body zones – head and shoulders, back, hips, legs and feet – while eliminating partner disturbance. A layer of natural latex, providing outstanding support and recovery as well as great air flow and cooling thanks to latex’s thousands of ventilation holes. A top layer of gel-infused memory foam for the ultimate in pressure relief, body contouring and temperature stability. A covering created from cashmere knitted fabric, which we selected because it is a natural fabric that is soft to the touch yet extremely durable. NB: Some mattress foams may include unpleasant chemicals such as formaldehyde, mercury, lead and ozone depleters, but at the Sleep Republic all our mattresses are CertiPUR-US® certified to contain only foams that feel good and you can feel good about. Try a hybrid mattress for free At the Sleep Republic we’re confident our specially designed hybrid mattresses provide the perfect sleep experience. But don’t just take our word for it. Read the hundreds of independently verified reviews from our customers on our website, and then try a Sleep Republic mattress free for 150 nights and find out for yourself how comfortable a hybrid mattress can be. We offer free same-day delivery for orders received before midday in most major metropolitan areas, and we’ll deliver your mattress anywhere in Australia provided we can reach you. A guide to improving your sleep this winter

Don’t let winter ruin your sleep On a cold winter’s night, there’s nowhere cosier than a warm, comfy bed. However the cooler weather can also disrupt our sleep patterns. For those who sleep poorly in winter, this can mean problems ranging from tiredness and moodiness to seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and depressive episodes. At the Sleep Republic we’ve been making premium pocket-spring mattresses for over 20 years, and we’re experts in ensuring you get a great night’s sleep no matter the time of year. Try our top tips for sleeping well in winter. Top tips for sleeping well in winter Keep warm A cold breeze can interrupt the soundest sleep. If you’re having a problem staying warm at night: Ensure there are no drafts in your bedroom Layer your bedding for extra warmth Use a thicker natural fibre drape, like our natural bamboo sheets Use a hot water bottle or bean bag We tend to lose a lot of heat through our extremities, so if you’re still feeling the cold then try keeping your feet and hands warm with socks. But not too warm Ironically, being too warm is a common cause of poor sleep problems in winter. Experts say body temperature plays a critical role in regulating our body clock, which tells us when to feel sleepy or alert. “If our core temperature is too high, the brain cannot easily make the switch from being awake to being asleep, or create the best-quality sleep, says Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley. A bedroom temperature of 15-20 degrees is ideal, and will encourage your body to release more of the natural sleep hormone melatonin. Bath before bed A hot bath or shower is a good way to get yourself warm before bed. And it can also help prepare you for a good night’s rest immediately afterwards, because cooling down is an important signal to our bodies that it’s time to go to sleep, says Professor Walker. Exercise The ‘snuggle up’ mentality that winter induces all too often results in our exercise routines going out the window. But making the extra effort required to warm your muscles up in cold weather is really worth it – even just a 10-minute walk each day can be enough to improve sleep quality and increase sleep duration. And it will also help you to stay healthy and avoid that winter weight gain. Routine Winter alters so many of our routines, but try as far as possible to go to bed and get up at the same time each day. Expose yourself to bright sunlight in the morning, and let natural light into your home or workspace. This all helps to set your body clock and optimise the quality of your sleep later on. Create a relaxing bedtime ritual to help you unwind at the end of the day. For example read a book or magazine by a soft light, listen to relaxing music or take that warm bath. Screens As hard as it may be, try to avoid TV and other screen use for the last hour before bed. Experts say night-time exposure to the blue light of digital screens (TVs, computers, phones and tablets) disrupts your body clock and suppresses melatonin. Caffeine drinks A hot tea or coffee can feel so comforting on a chilly winter’s night, but avoid caffeine before bed. Opt for a glass of warm milk or a herbal tea instead. Quality mattress A good bed is the foundation of a good night’s sleep all year round. If you find you’re not sleeping well, it may be time for a new mattress. Find out what a difference a new Sleep Republic mattress could make to your sleep by taking us up on our 100-night no-obligation trial, with free same-day delivery and free returns nationwide. Your mattress should be providing you with a medium-firm level of support, not too hard and not too soft – and that’s exactly what we have designed at the Sleep Republic. All our mattresses consist of: A top layer of cashmere knitted fabric, warm and soft to the touch yet extremely durable Gel-infused memory foam that delivers temperature stability, keeping you warm but wicking away excess heat, while also providing pressure relief and body contouring Natural latex to keep your bed breathable through thousands of tiny ventilation holes and provide superior support Close to 2000 individual pocket springs, meaning no partner disturbance and more support in 5 key body zones. You can buy now from Sleep Republic and pay later with Zip and Afterpay. Need help or have a question on choosing the right mattress for you? How to choose the right foam mattress

Using mattress reviews to choose the best foam mattress for you Buying a new mattress is an important decision, and you have plenty of options to choose from. So how do you make sure you get the best mattress for you? You need to choose the right type of mattress to suit your needs and preferences, and of course you need to check the reviews to make sure it lives up to your expectations. So here’s our guide to the features you should consider, and what to look for in mattress reviews, so you can choose the right mattress for you. Find out why so many people are choosing the Sleep Republic hybrid foam mattress. You can try it for yourself with free same day delivery and our 150 comfort guarantee. How do you choose the best foam mattress? Before we start looking at mattress reviews, it’s worth considering what kind of features you want. You’re going to spend about a third of your time on your new mattress, so you need to make sure it’s going to give you all the support you need for the best night’s sleep. Here are some of the features which make our foam mattresses really special: Natural latex foam, not synthetic Gel infused memory foam, not regular memory foam Lots of pocket springs Since it’s a hybrid foam mattress, we’ve combined several different materials to create the very best mattress. You get the best of both worlds with comfort and support. The foam layers give you that comfortable, weightless feeling, while the high definition pocket spring system gives your body the support it needs. Softness lets your muscles fully relax while the spring system provides the correct support to keep your spine at a natural alignment, relieving pressure between your vertebrae. So if you’re looking for the best foam mattress, the answer is actually a hybrid foam mattress with a high-quality spring system. However, we love the mattress we’ve created, so we are biased. This is why mattress reviews are so useful and important—you don’t have to take our word for it. Get the most out of mattress reviews With so many online mattress retailers, looking at bed in a box reviews is an essential step in the shopping process. But with the sheer volume of online reviews, it can be a bit overwhelming. Here are our tips for getting the most out of online mattress reviews: 1. Look for reviewers you resonate with. You shouldn’t always trust what strangers are saying on the internet, so it’s worth trying to find reviews written by people who seem to know what they’re talking about, or who have preferences which are similar to your own. 2. Find reviews which address your questions or concerns. For example, if you have back pain or if you’re concerned that the edges of the mattress will sag, look for reviews which address those points. 3. Have a look at professional reviews. There are several independent mattress review sites which can be helpful if you’re looking for an expert opinion on a mattress you’re considering. What are people saying about Sleep Republic? Your guide to caring for your mattress

Top tips on mattress care and maintenance A good mattress should last you well over a decade with proper care. At the Sleep Republic, all our mattresses come with a 12-year warranty. We make high quality pocket spring mattresses, that will stand the test of time. With over 20 years in the business, we’ve learned how to make the perfect mattress, and we know how best to care for them. Here are our top tips to help ensure that you get as much life out of your mattress as possible. Top tips on caring for your mattress Use protection A mattress protector creates a spill-proof, dust-proof barrier around your bed. We recommend you choose a quality mattress protector such as the 5S Antimicrobial Protector. Treated with silver chloride to inhibit bacteria, mould and mildew, it prevents stains and odours, as well as prolonging mattress life. Spin zone You never need to flip your Sleep Republic mattress. However rotating it top to bottom every few months will help to prevent compression in heavily used spots. Keep it clean If you happen to spill liquid onto your mattress, then blot it dry as soon as you can. And if you notice any stains or marks, remove them by gently wiping or dabbing with a damp cloth. Never use solvents or strong chemicals. Afterwards, allow the damp area plenty of time to dry before making up the bed again. Suck it up Regular vacuuming can help keep your mattress clean by removing accumulations of dust and skin particles that can build up over time. Consider using the handheld brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to protect the lining of your mattress. To absorb mattress odours, sprinkle baking soda and leave for 30 minutes, then use the vacuum cleaner to remove. Jump off While your children may enjoy sharing your bed, jumping on it should be avoided. This can result in damage to your mattress’s pocket springs, as well as the layers of memory foam, natural latex and knitted cashmere that make your Sleep Republic mattress so comfortable. Light side Occasionally exposing your mattress to fresh air and natural light can help to discourage mould and dust mites, and the increased air flow carries away moisture and musty smells. Pets Try to convince your dog or cat to sleep in their own bed, or at the very least on top of the covers. Dogs may chew, lick and scratch their bedding, and pets can introduce hair, parasites, and allergens into the bed. HINT: Why not treat your dog to his or her own high-quality purpose-designed dog bed, lined with ‘K9’ memory foam and fitted with a durable, removable and washable suede-feel cover. Like all Sleep Republic mattresses, our dog beds come with free delivery nationwide. Carry with care If you need to move your mattress then lift and carry it with care, and ensure it is fully supported during transport. Home base A quality bed base will protect your mattress from the bottom up, supporting its weight firmly and evenly and preventing premature sagging. Consider having a custom-designed Sleep Republic bed base delivered for free they’re easy to assemble, cost effective and aesthetically pleasing. Time for change Even with the very best care, your mattress will eventually wear out. It may already be showing its age, or perhaps you’re waking up with an aching back. If you see any of the classic signs you need a new mattress, or suspect your old mattress may be the cause of these health issues, then it might be time to see what a difference a new mattress could make to your life, and there’s an easy and cost-free way to find out. With a free 100-night trial period and free delivery and free returns nationwide, why not try out a brand new Sleep Republic mattress? Perfect sleep experience Our mattresses are built on a base of over 1000 pocket springs, topped with gel-infused memory foam, lined with anti-allergenic natural latex and covered with knitted cashmere to create a perfect medium-firm sleep experience that’s designed to last. We’ve been in the mattress industry for over 20 years, and over 20 per cent of our customers are either repeat or are referred to us by existing customers—see the hundreds of independently verified customer reviews on our website for yourself. We offer free same-day delivery for orders received before midday in most major metropolitan areas, and we’ll deliver your mattress anywhere in Australia provided we can reach you. Advantages of Co-Sleeping With Your Baby

Co-sleeping with baby: what you need to know When parents sleep in the same beds as their babies, it’s called co-sleeping. It’s the way humans have naturally raised their children for thousands of years, and it’s still common practice in many parts of the world. However, co-sleeping is less popular than it used to be. This is, in part, because it has been linked to an increased risk of sudden unexpected death in infancy, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and fatal sleeping accidents. At Sleep Republic we don’t express an opinion on co-sleeping. But we do believe you should make an informed decision on where your baby sleeps. We’re focused on making the best high-quality pocket-spring mattresses we can so everyone can get perfect sleep, no matter who’s in your bed. Advantages of co-sleeping Parents who advocate co-sleeping with their babies believe that it has many advantages, including: Helping their babies feel safe, secure and loved from an early age Making it easy to breastfeed during the night, and allowing the baby to be soothed back to sleep before he or she fully wakes up so parents can get more sleep Enjoying the experience of waking up each morning next to a happy baby Advantages of a cot in the same room The federal government-funded Raising Children Network recommends that rather than sleeping in your bed, your baby should sleep in a cot next to your bed for the first 6-12 months. Like co-sleeping, having your baby in a separate cot in the same room has the advantages of: Being near your baby so you can respond quickly when they wake up Making it easy to check on your baby whenever you want without needing to get out of bed But it has advantages over co-sleeping, including: You get better sleep. Babies sleep very lightly, and their movements can disturb a parent sleeping in the same bed If babies are used to settling in their own beds, it’s easier for them to sleep away from their parents at childcare centres or in the care of friends or relatives It’s easier to start babies off in their own beds than to change the sleeping arrangements at a later stage. Of course some parents choose to sleep their baby in a separate room, often using a baby monitor to keep in close touch. One study has found that this can result in better sleep for infants, especially after the age of 4 months. Factors which raise the risks of co-sleeping The Raising Children Network warns that the risks of SIDS in infancy are increased by co-sleeping if: You or your partner is a smoker You or your partner use drugs, alcohol or any type of sedative medication that causes heavy sleep Your baby is less than three months old, was born prematurely, or is smaller than most babies when born Top tips for safe co-sleeping The Western Australian Department of Health offers this advice on how to co-sleep as safely as possible: Place your baby on their back and beside one parent/carer, not in between two people so that they don’t overheat, get smothered, or slip underneath pillows, adult bedding or covers Make sure your baby is not too close to the edge of the bed where they could roll off. Don’t place pillows at the side of your baby to prevent them from rolling off If you’ve placed your mattress on the floor, make sure it’s away from the wall and other furniture so there are no gaps your baby could slip into Make sure that your mattress is firm and flat Pillows, adult bedding or covers, and any other soft items should be kept away from your baby Make sure there is nothing soft underneath your baby, like a sheepskin rug or a wool underlay Dress your baby in a baby sleeping bag with fitted neck and arm holes, so they can lie outside the adult bedding or covers Only use lightweight blankets Your baby should not be wrapped when sharing the same sleep surface as a parent/carer to prevent overheating. Children or pets should never share the same sleep surface with your baby For more information and advice on your baby’s sleeping arrangements, talk to your doctor, midwife or child health nurse, or contact Healthdirect Australia. The perfect sleep experience Whether you’re sharing a bed with your baby, your partner or sleeping alone, the secret to a good night’s sleep is a great mattress. 6 signs it's time for a new mattress

The telltale signs of an ageing mattress When you consider that we spend a third of our lives in bed, it makes sense that our mattresses need regular replacing. If you’re experiencing any of these classic signs of an ageing mattress, it’s an offer you should seriously consider. With a free 100-night trial and free delivery and returns nationwide, a Sleep Republic mattress in a box is the easiest way to explore how a new mattress could change your life. 1. Age Even the best mattress won’t last forever. Factors such as frequency of use, body weight, and care and cleaning can all make a difference. Consumer advocacy group Choice says the average lifespan of a mattress is eight years. Can you remember when you bought your current mattress? If not, it might be time to consider replacing it. 2. Aches and pains Bodily soreness and stiffness are common indicators that your mattress has passed its use-by date. If you find it hard to get into a comfortable position at night, or regularly wake to hip pain, lower back pain or neck pain, your mattress may be the problem. While some mattresses naturally become softer with age, others get firmer. Either way, over time they lose their ability to support your body’s natural alignment. Old mattresses can push or pull you into unnatural positions as you sleep. All too often we fail to notice this gradual deterioration, which can develop long before you see any outward signs of wear and tear on your mattress. 3. Smells and stains Your mattress is porous, and even if you use a protector, over time it will absorb moisture from sweat, spills and other liquids. Together with accumulations of dust, hair and skin cells, this can make older mattresses a perfect breeding ground for: Mold Mildew Bacteria Dust mites A damp, musty or unpleasant smell or visible stains and discolouration can be warning signs that you’re not alone in your bed. Not as immediately obvious but potentially serious side-effects can include year-round allergies, with tell-tale symptoms such as a runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes. If this sounds like you, your old mattress may be to blame. 4. Sags, lumps and tears Do you get that sinking feeling every time you climb into bed? Over time mattresses tend to disintegrate under the most heavily used areas, as layers of foam become compressed and springs lose their elasticity. This may result in sagging in the middle of the mattress, if that’s where couples spoon or snuggle, or further outwards if they tend to nest comfortably on their respective sides of the bed. Either way, the result is a loss of firmness and support in your favourite spot. Apart from sagging, internal mattress padding can tear inside and shift around, causing uncomfortable lumps and craters. Any of these problems indicate your mattress has reached the end of its useful life. 5. Creaks and squeaks Few things are more infuriating than a squeaky bed. Don’t ignore this problem. It could be the first sign that the springs in your mattress aren’t compressing the way they are supposed to. Broken or worn-out box springs can affect your mattress’s comfort, support and shape, interfering with your sleep. Quick fixes will generally prove to be stopgaps that don’t address the underlying problem. 6. You sleep better somewhere else If you notice that you had a better night’s sleep in a hotel, as an overnight guest at someone else’s house, or even on the couch, it could be a warning sign that there’s something wrong with your mattress. The symptoms of a lack of quality sleep are not always as obvious as tossing and turning at night or yawning during the day. Poor sleep can result in: Moodiness and poor judgement Inability to concentrate Increased appetite, resulting in weight gain Feeling more refreshed after a night away from home can be just the wake-up call you need to realise the problem lies with your own bed. Time to spring into action At Sleep Republic, we’ve been in the mattress business for over 20 years. We make high-quality pocket-spring mattresses, not glorified pieces of foam rubber. Even our smallest mattress contains over 1000 individual springs, and all our mattresses come with a 12-year warranty. We create the perfect hybrid foam mattress experience with Gel-infused memory foam Anti-allergenic natural latex Knitted cashmere for comfort The result is a medium/firm feel that is comfortable yet supportive. Not too soft, not too hard; the best of both worlds. Don’t just take our word for it. Take us up on our 100-night free trial and if you’re not happy with how you’re sleeping, we’ll collect your mattress at no cost to you and donate it to charity or recycle it. What is a hybrid memory foam mattress?

Discover what ultimate comfort feels like Everyone needs a good night’s sleep, but how can we get the best one? Shopping for a new mattress can be tricky, there are a lot of options to consider and it’s an important decision. You’re going to spend a lot of time on your new mattress, after all. So what does ‘hybrid’ really mean when we’re talking about mattresses? At Sleep Republic, it means we’ve combined several different materials to create Australia’s most comfortable and supportive mattress. It’s a bed in a box with a difference. Find out why our mattress is Australia’s best mattress in a box. What is a hybrid memory foam mattress? A hybrid memory foam mattress is simply a mattress which combines memory foam with other materials, usually latex foam or springs. At Sleep Republic, our hybrid mattress combines six different materials to create the ultimate hybrid mattress. Our hybrid mattress uses: Cashmere knitted fabric surface Gel infused memory foam Natural latex foam High definition pocket spring system Dynamic edge support system 3D spacer fabric side panels We’ve chosen a range of high-quality materials and combined them, so you can get the best features of each one with your Sleep Republic mattress. The advantage of combining materials So we know a hybrid mattress combines different materials, but what does each one give you in terms of comfort and support? Here is how the most important layers of our mattress work together to support you while you’re sleeping: 1. Gel infused memory foam Memory foam releases pressure in your muscles and joints by contouring to your body and providing a soft, comfortable surface. The gel infused with the memory foam provides temperature stability to help avoid overheating. 2. Natural latex Natural latex foam gives you outstanding support and recovery for your body while you’re sleeping. The surface also provides air flow with thousands on small ventilation holes, and natural latex is also environmentally sustainable and renewable. 3. High definition pocket springs Our spring system uses a huge number of small springs (2,250 in the king size) to provide all the support your body needs while you’re sleeping, as well as reduced partner disturbance. Our high definition pocket spring system is also set up to give you the right amount of support in five specific body zones. Using pocket springs also means our mattress will stay supportive for much longer than mattresses without springs. Why is a hybrid mattress better than other memory foam mattresses? To answer this question, we need to understand what the ideal mattress should be doing for your body. Your mattress needs to be soft enough to allow your muscles and joints to relax and release pressure. But you don’t want to sink too deep in the softness; your mattress also needs to be firm enough to support your spine and keep it at a straight, natural alignment. If your mattress is too firm, your muscles and joints won’t be able to fully relax. If it’s too soft, your spine will be out of alignment and cause pressure between your vertebrae. This is why our mattress is medium-firm, giving you the best of both worlds—all the comfort and support you need for a great night’s sleep. Regular memory foam mattresses which don’t have an advanced spring system are unlikely to give you the proper support you need for your back. Choose the best mattress with Sleep Republic Sleep Republic is Australian owned, and our mattress is designed by Australians, for Australians. We created our mattress to provide the very best comfort and support you can get anywhere. Your Sleep Republic mattress arrives in a convenient box with free delivery. Not only that, but it’s supported by a 12-year warranty and our 150 night comfort guarantee. If you aren’t completely satisfied with your mattress within 150 nights, we’ll simply pick it up free of charge from anywhere in Australia, and you’ll get a full refund. No questions asked, no worries. Are you ready to discover what comfort really feels like with the best bed in a box? Learn more about your new mattress here.

So sad it was a bit too firm for me but true to their word they arranged collection by Salvation Army without any fuss or delay and refunded promptly. I would recommend trying them nothing to lose and the experience was very positive – wish all companies could treat customers this way. hope they live long and prosper!” – K.V. “Received the Sleep Republic queen size mattress within a week from ordering as it had to be delivered to Far North QLD. Arrived in good order & found unpacking very easy … This is the first mattress we have found that seems to suit us both” – Susan M “I was extremely impressed with their prompt and friendly responses and overall terrific customer service.” – Corrin. B “Was sceptical at first both buying online and a mattress ‘in a box’. Absolutely happy with both the mattress itself, and the prompt, courteous, professional service.” – Darren “Received our mattress and base with same day delivery! We are so happy with how comfortable the bed is.” – Sarah G “Bought the queen mattress bundled with the bed base, sheets and mattress protector. Terrific value at less than $2k for the lot with delivery. Mattress is exactly what I was hoping for; I have back trouble so firmer is perfect for me, but it’s got the right amount of cushioning with the foam layers. Bed base is simple and solid – much easier to assemble with some help, though. Good quality mattress protector that still lets the bed breathe, great for anyone who overheats. The sheets are amazing – couldn’t believe how soft they were. Delivery was very quick, only issue was the handle breaking off the mattress box which complicated moving it around. Otherwise everything was perfect.” – Minerva L Why our customers are so happy At Sleep Republic we’ve been in the mattress business for more than 20 years, and over 20 per cent of our customers are either repeat or are referred to us by existing customers. Traditional mattresses vs hybrid mattresses

Why you should consider Sleep Republic’s mattress in a box We hear an awful lot about the importance of sleep these days. We hear almost as much about the importance of mattresses – and for good reason. The right mattress can provide the ultimate sleeping experience and make all the difference when it comes to your back and joints. So how do you choose a mattress when there are so many different types to choose from? First and foremost, it helps to understand the difference between traditional mattresses and modern hybrid mattresses. Want to sleep on your purchase decision? We offer a 150 Night Free Trial on our hybrid mattress. Learn more. What is a ‘traditional’ mattress? Innerspring mattresses are the traditional choice in the mattress world. They’re the ones you likely grew up with – they feature a steel coil support system covered by padding or upholstery. Most innerspring mattresses coils are made from a single continuous wire, looped into adjacent springs. This design distributes weight across neighbouring springs to help the mattress hold its integrity longer. However, the durability of a traditional mattress is dependent on the gauge, or thickness, and quality of the wire. Low-quality innerspring mattresses are known to sag. No other mattress type has such a high sagging rate. They also tend to have lower owner satisfaction due to increased squeaking and creaking noises with time – you can expect to get about ten years’ life out of of a traditional mattress before it starts to seriously undermine your comfort and support. What is a ‘hybrid’ mattress? As the name suggests, hybrid mattresses combine the best elements of other popular mattress types. While ‘hybrid’ is occasionally used as a buzz term, Sleep Republic manufacture hybrid mattresses in their truest form. We combine high definition pocket springs with a natural layer of latex, and gel infused memory foam for unrivalled comfort. The mattresses surface is carefully encased by cashmere knitted fabric. Like memory foams mattresses, our hybrid mattresses absorb motion rather than distributing it – meaning minimal disturbance for couples sharing a night’s sleep. They contour to the body in the same way memory foam mattresses do, and provide the stable support of innerspring mattresses. Available at a similar cost to leading traditional mattress, most Hybrids come with the option of a ‘try it free’ sleep trial and will last over a decade if properly cared for. Better yet, they come rolled, wrapped, boxed and delivered to your door at no cost to you. Why choose a hybrid mattress from Sleep Republic? We’ve been making and selling mattresses for over 20 years, and we’ve put all our knowledge together to bring you the perfect hybrid mattress design. 1,850 high-definition pocket springs topped with memory foam makes for a ‘not too soft, not too firm’ feel. Natural latex give an immediate cushioning effect, while the spring base provides necessary spinal support. Specifically zoned in five places to provide the ultimate sleeping experience, our mattress is ideal for side and back sleepers. Stomach sleepers can also find comfort thanks to the gel-infused memory foam on the top layer. But we don’t ask you to just take our word for how great our mattress is – we offer you a 150 Night Free Trial. If you’re not happy with how you’re sleeping, we’ll come and take your mattress away at no cost to you. We provide this service because we’re so sure you’ll love our hybrid mattress more than any other mattress you’ve ever owned. How to get to sleep faster

Change your sleep patterns for the better Sleep deprivation is the worst. It can affect our moods, our concentration, our energy levels and our physical health – did you know long-term sleep deficiency can increase your risk of heart disease and diabetes? Yet in a world filled with non-stop demands and distractions, it can be hard to catch the amount of shut-eye that we so desperately need. There’s a wealth of information online about how to practice good sleep hygiene, but some of the best advice is the simplest. We’ve gathered our top tips for getting to sleep (and staying asleep), and none of them involve practising yoga, buying an immersive rain forest soundtrack machine, or eliminating coffee from your diet. Think your mattress is affecting your sleep? Get the perfect night’s sleep on our hybrid memory foam mattress – contact Sleep Republic today. Get regular exercise Now, allow us to preface this point by saying we understand not everyone is a rise-at-the-crack-of-dawn, cardio-loving exercise enthusiast. We don’t believe you should need to physically exhaust yourself to sleep soundly at night. But it is important to do a light-to-moderate amount of exercise each day if you’re looking to improve your sleep habits and cut down on the amount of nights you spend lying awake staring at the ceiling. That’s because exercise boosts the production of serotonin in your brain and decreases your levels of cortisol, otherwise known as the stress hormone. Serotonin is the precursor for melatonin and helps regulate your sleep-wake cycles as well as your internal body clock. It also assists in triggering REM, aka deep sleep, and warding off depression and anxiety. So how much exercise is enough on a daily basis? According to research, as little as 10 minutes can significantly improve the quality of your nighttime sleep, especially when done on a regular basis. Just be wary of exercising too close to bedtime or your body might become too revved up to switch off. Try the ‘4-7-8’ method This simple breathing technique is easy to remember and proven to help you fall asleep when nothing else is working. It can also be used to relieve anxiety or stress during the daytime. The technique consists of breathing in for four seconds, holding the breath for seven seconds, and exhaling for eight seconds. You can repeat the pattern as many times as necessary – some people claim that it helps them fall asleep in under a minute! There is limited scientific research behind the ‘4-7-8’ method but loads of anecdotal evidence to suggest it works. It’s definitely worth a try next time you’re dealing with insomnia or have head filled with racing thoughts. At the very least, it will help you relax and breathe properly. Watch what (and when) you eat Our diet influences our lives in lots of different ways and sleep is no exception. If you’re fond of rich, fatty foods and consuming them too close to bedtime, you’re probably not going to be getting great shut-eye. Caffeine is an obvious culprit when it comes to keeping us awake at night and most heavy, hard-to-digest meals won’t do you any favours either. However, the following foods could actually help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer: Nuts, especially those rich in sleep-inducing melatonin like almonds and walnuts Bananas and other antioxidant-rich fruits such as kiwifruit Fish, particularly salmon, tuna, trout and mackerel due to its unique combination of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D Porridge, which is not only a comfort food but drowsiness-inducing Milk and dairy – in moderation, of course – because calcium can help reduce stress by stabilising the nerve fibres in your brain. The other dietary staple for those looking to improve their sleep is herbal tea. Chamomile is the best-known option, but you could also try alternative bedtime blends – look for ones containing valerian root, lemon balm and lavender. Upgrade your mattress Ah, you knew we were coming to this! There’s no denying that the quality of your mattress has a direct effect on the quality of your sleep and overall health. If you frequently wake up feeling unrested, sleep better on beds belonging to friends or relatives, or have to lie on a particular place in your mattress to get to sleep, it’s probably time for a mattress upgrade. As mattresses get older they can start to sag or feel lumpy which is uncomfortable and could be keeping you awake. Even if your mattress is relatively new, the wrong kind of mattress could prevent you from sleeping. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to selecting the perfect mattress, so take the time to read mattress reviews online before buying a new one. You might also want to explore the difference between Hybrid foam mattresses and traditional mattresses. If you have a specific health problem, such as a dodgy back, that is also impacting your sleep, our hybrid pocket spring mattress has a gel-infused memory foam layer to aid in pressure relief and temperature control. It is super supportive and the best mattress for back pain. Turn off your devices Everything from your smartphone charger to your TV generates ambient heat and affects your ability to go to sleep. Don’t leave your devices switched on beyond necessity and try to keep them out of your bedroom altogether. If you are spending hours lying in bed looking at your smartphone or tablet, it may be disrupting your sleep. The light from these devices triggers your brain into thinking it is daytime and suppresses the production of melatonin, the ‘sleep hormone’. Turn off your devices at least an hour or two before bed, or better yet, remove them from your bedroom entirely to start sleeping soundly in no time. Want to see why our mattress in a box is loved by people all over Australia? Change your sleep for the better with a 150 Night Trial and discover the Sleep Republic difference.

Is Your Mattress The Cause Of These Bad Health Problems?

Not everyone wakes up each morning with a smile on their face and spring in their step. We all live busy lives, and our health often suffers because of it. It could be the glasses of wine you had last night; the stress of waking up late, getting stuck in traffic; or the fast food (and cigarettes) you sneaked in after work. However, what happens when you eat right, don’t smoke or drink, exercise daily and manage your stress – and still can’t sleep well? Believe it or not, your mattress could be causing the following unpleasant health problems… Allergies Nothing is more unpleasant that nasal congestion, burning eyes, sneezing and sniffing. Antihistamines do provide relief but can leave you feeling sleepy. If you’ve never experienced hayfever before but are suddenly experiencing its symptoms, it might be your bed’s fault. Older beds that aren’t cleaned often can cause dust to develop, which can attract dust mites and in severe cases even bed bugs. Purchase an allergy-proof mattress protector to cover your bed. If your symptoms subside, you know it’s time to get a new mattress. Aches And Pains Your mattress can cause aches and pains all over your body. A bed that doesn’t provide enough support can cause back pain, one with sagging or lumps can hurt your neck and ones that place pressure on your knees, shoulder and hips can cause joint discomfort. Lingering aches and pains often lead to weight gain as it can keep you from exercising and cause you to take potentially addictive pain medication which have harsh side effects. If the pain is most intense the first thing in the morning, it’s likely being caused by your bed. Snoring Snoring is a common cause of strife in relationships, and your mattress could be causing it or making it worse. A mattress that has not kept its shape will sag, causing your body to sag with it, impeding your airway enough for snoring to occur. If you think that your partner should just put in some earplugs, remember that snoring can increase your chances of experiencing headaches and reflux in mild cases, as well as sleep apnoea, stroke and heart disease in more serious ones. Never underestimate the importance of your mattress in helping you get a good’s night sleep and staying healthy. If you’re going to be spending a third of your life in bed, it only makes sense it will impact your waking hours, so choose wisely. If you aren’t sure where to begin with mattress shopping, contact Sleep Republic today.

3 Ways To Make Your Mattress Last Longer

Life changes when you invest in a good mattress. Finally, you know what it means to have a good night’s sleep. Your partner’s tossing and turning no longer affects you, you no longer wake up stiff and sore and falling asleep is as effortless as counting to five. When buying your mattress, you would have heard that it’s going last you as long as 10 years. It could last you a lot longer than this with the right care – and much shorter if you fail to take the following measures to keep it in good condition. Treat It With Respect The first step in keeping your bed in top shape is showing it a little respect. This means reducing the wear and tear. While your children can share your bed, jumping should be avoided as they could damage your box springs at the same time. Eating in bed is another no-no, as no matter how neat you try to be, you’ll still end up shedding tiny crumbs, which can encourage bedbugs, cockroaches, and ants to flock to the area and infest your bedroom and mattress. Also keep your four-legged friends off your bedding, as they can bring parasites and other nasties such as worms right into your bed. Treat It To Regular Care Enjoying a new bed doesn’t mean just letting it sit there when you aren’t sleeping on it. It needs care too. Flip your mattress every few months – when buying your bed, you would have received information on how to do this. Twice annual vacuuming will also help keep your mattress clean, removing built-up dust that may have accumulated over the months. Treat It To A Quality Base And Protection If you want your mattress to last you longer and make cleaning and maintaining it easier, investing in a quality mattress base, protector and bed sheets are essential. A good base extends your mattress’s lifespan from the bottom up, keeping its structure intact, supporting its weight evenly and preventing sagging. It also encourages your mattress to breathe by letting air move through and around it. A mattress protector protects from the top down, creating a leak and dustproof barrier between you and your bed. Finally, the right bed sheets will provide the perfect finishing touch, Breathable bedding such as bamboo sheets provide excellent temperature control, reducing tossing and turning. Less tossing and turning will keep your bed supporting you for longer. Looking for a mattress that will last you the next decade? For Sheet's Sake ? Why Your Bedding Could Be Impacting Your Sleep

You’ve eliminated caffeine from your diet, put away your cell phone before bedtime and have a quality bed that promises a good night’s sleep. Despite this, you still spend the night tossing and turning – unable to nod off. If this sounds familiar, don’t head off to your doctor for a prescribed sedative just yet. It could be your bed sheet that’s too blame! Here are two common mistakes people make when choosing your bedding and how to choose the right ones for your sleeping needs. Mistake #1 – Using One Type Of Sheet All Year Long Finding the perfect sheets means realising that your needs might change according to the season and that you might need several different sets. Our bodies are sensitive and being too cold or too hot can disrupt our sleeping patterns. Living in Australia, cold weather is less of a concern for us as it doesn’t occur as often, and it’s easier to get warmer than it is to get cooler. Mistake #2 – Prioritising What Goes On Top – And Not What’s Underneath Plenty of time is devoted to people finding the perfect duvets, and you don’t have to go far to seek advice on whether you should choose feathers, cotton or polyester as your filling of choice. Your actual bed sheets and your pillow sheets are just as important. The right sheeting won’t irritate your skin, harbour dust mites and allergens or bunch together. Mistake #3 – Picking The Right Sheets Feeling too hot to sleep? As temperatures in Australia continue to climb all year round, staying cool will not only help you sleep better but also reduce your reliance on an air conditioner. The ideal bedding for a good night’s sleep will be breathable, allowing your body to cycle through heat surges as you sleep without waking you up or causing you to break out in an uncomfortable sweat. Avoid synthetic materials and go for cotton, silk or bamboo. Bamboo sheets are more breathable than their counterparts as they can banish trapped moisture and sweat in half the time. It’s also a durable fabric, meaning it will last longer without yellowing – and without developing unattractive piling. Cleaning it is as easy as tossing it in the wash, and it will get softer and more comfortable each time. Bamboo is suitable for every member of the family as it’s hypoallergenic and resistant to microbes and bacteria – and unlike animal-derived fabrics, you can enjoy it as an eco-friendly and guilt-free alternative. Ready to make the switch? You can find a wide range of bamboo sheets by visiting the Sleep Republic today. You could be sleeping better before you know it!
